Water Buffalo Reserve
Hungary's largest visitable buffalo herd can be found in Kápolnapuszta, between Zalakomár and Balatonmagyaród. The main goal of the reserve is to preserve the population of water buffalos, which are considered native to Hungary, and to present these animals to the public. Visitors can also enjoy a picnic and take a pleasant walk in the area.
A telescope in the reserve helps visitors observe the animals, and if we're lucky, we can not only spot buffalos wallowing or grazing peacefully but also catch a glimpse of the swift little ground squirrels.
Children can enjoy a playground and a petting zoo, while the designated walking trail allows visitors to explore the area's natural treasures. In the stable, old photographs and traditional tools showcase the history of buffalo keeping, while the exhibition in the visitor center presents the rich wildlife of the Kis-Balaton region. The reserve welcomes visitors all year round; during the winter, the herd can be observed up close in the stable and paddock, while in the summer, the animals can be seen roaming freely outdoors.
